Emmett’s Story
A Fighter from the Very Beginning
In May of 2020—early in the uncertainty of COVID—Melina and Cody Funk believed they were still weeks away from welcoming their baby boy. Due to limited prenatal care during pandemic restrictions, Melina didn’t realize she was experiencing life-threatening symptoms of HELLP syndrome until it was nearly too late.
On May 25th, at around 7 p.m., Emmett was delivered via emergency C-section. He was just 12 ½ inches long and weighed 1 lb. 8 oz.—a tiny, beautiful mix of joy and fear. Emmett then spent four long months in the NICU. He required prolonged intubation and, at one point, a three-week transfer to Seattle Children’s Hospital for a specialized heart procedure.
The trauma of being born at 25 weeks and 6 days led to a condition called periventricular leukomalacia, which has caused Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, and Intellectual Disability. Today, Emmett relies on his wheelchair, g-tube, and the loving care of his family for his everyday needs. And in return, he fills their lives with endless joy.
Why This Project Matters
As Emmett grows, caring for him in their current home has become increasingly difficult. His parents moved his room downstairs for safety, but the lower level has no bedroom or full bathroom. His medical equipment and special bed are squeezed into a small office space, leaving no room for toys or the comforts every little boy deserves. Bathing happens in the kitchen sink—something his parents wish they could replace with a space that brings him dignity and comfort.
Determined to give their son the safe, accessible environment he needs, the Funks reached out to their community. With the help of Flynn Home Improvements, a plan was created to build an Emmett Suite—a fully accessible bedroom and bathroom addition that supports his medical and mobility needs.
But they can’t do it alone.
